Intro

I am in a cell alone. The guards didn’t trust putting me in with another person.  I can

barely remember what happened… how I got in here, who I am... Nothing makes sense.  I only

remember bits and pieces… Screams, mostly screams. And blood. That’s all I remember. My

sentencing will take place tomorrow after noon.  People will decide my fate. A case where I

am the criminal, and don’t know the crime. Oh well, I think as I climb up to the top bunk,

straighten the blue sheets, and lay down. I turn my head to stare at the iron bars that

block the only opening of this concrete cube. My bunker’s frame is mostly solid steel, with

2 thin “mattresses”.  Apparently comfort is not the purpose of this room. Shivering, I fold

the sheets in half, curl into a ball, and wrap them around my body. Why not give us the

death sentence if you plan on freezing us in cells anyway? Closing my eyes, I count by

4’s until I fall into an unsettling sleep.
